Here are some common questions I am asked and my responses to them!
Q: What does a fiber artist do?
A: A fiber artist works with thread, yarn, and material. For me, this includes knitting, crocheting, hand embroidery, and machine sewing.
Q: What is your favorite thing to make?
A: That’s a hard one! I’d have to say amigurumi. That consists of crochet stuffed animals. It’s just so fun to see them come to life from a bunch of separate pieces!
Q: Do you have an Etsy shop?
A: Yes, I do! My shop name is Katelyn Marie Customs on there. Here is the link to shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/KatelynMarieCustoms
Q: Do you do custom orders/commissions?
A: Yes! Most of my work is made up of custom orders. My business is named Katelyn Marie Customs for a reason! I enjoy making custom orders. If you are interested in a custom order, please comment below or contact me through email or messenger.
Q: How much do you charge?
A: I typically charge 3x the cost of materials. This helps me to cover the cost, as well as compensate myself for my time and skill. So, it depends on what you are wanting to order and what materials you want it to be made of. Almost all of my items end up being less than $100, and most are less than $50.
Q: Do you ship?
A: Yes, I do! Right now, I ship domestically (The United States of America). So, if you are not local, that is no problem!
Q: How long does it take for you to make something?
A: It really depends on what it is. The shortest amount of time it has taken me to make something is 30 minutes; that was a crochet pot scrubber. On the other hand, knitting a big blanket or creating a cross-stitch embroidery can take months. I’d say an average is a few days, maybe 5-10 hours. I’ve been told that I work quickly.
Q: How much time in advance do I need to place a custom order?
A: My minimum turn-around time is 2 weeks. This gives me time to purchase the materials, make the order, pack and ship it. I often have several custom orders on the books, so this helps me to stay on track. Oftentimes I will finish before the 2-week timeline, but I subscribe to the method of under-promising and over-delivering.
Q: What is your favorite fiber art skill?
A: Ah, that’s a hard one! I’d have to say crochet for now because I do it so often. It’s the majority of things I make. However, I love knitting when it comes to solid pieces like blankets or clothing, and I love embroidery for visual art. Machine sewing is my least favorite currently, and that’s because I am not the best at it yet.
Q: Do you make your own patterns?
A: Sometimes! I have a few that I have made. I am planning on cleaning them up and offering some of them for free on this website! Stay tuned for that.
That’s all I’ve got for now! If you have a question that you didn’t see in the post, feel free to ask it in the comments. I would be happy to answer it and even add it to the post.
